WHAT THE LIBRARIAN IS READING

2010

All books are available from the Benson Public Library except
where noted.

Zookeeper's Wife: a war story by Diane Ackerman
History which reads like a novel. In WWII Warsaw, Poland, a zookeeper and his
family work hard to save their residents, both the four-legged and two-legged
kind, especially those hunted by the Nazis who are next-door neighbors.

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld
A great
steam-punk novel for those who are interested or enjoy World War I,
royalty, action, animals, adventure, a budding romance, women pretending to be
male, flying warships, and exciting battle scenes.

True Grit: a novel by Charles Portis
With the new Coen Brothers movie coming out and the old John Wayne version, I
thought it about time I read the book which started it all.  Vibrant description,
colorful dialogue, and very real characters make for a quick and satisfying read.
Available in Large Print at the Benson Library.

mockingbird by Kathryn Erskine
Told from the point of view of a ten-year-old with Aspergers who is trying to cope
with the loss of her brother, it is a poignant amazingly told tale not to be missed.

The House at Riverton by Kate Morton
Yes, I am smitten with Kate Morton's novels.  In this one, she ties together a
housemaid, the family of the manor, World War I, poets, suffragettes, and
flappers.  Romance, family, unspoken love and tragedy all around.

Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly
Wow!  If you are grieving, wanting to get inside a teenager's mind, discovering
more about the French revolution or music, falling in love, or dealing with mental
health issues, this is one incredible book, even if only one of these describes
you.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro
The author of The Remains of the Day returns with a tale that looks at the value
of human life, friendship, love and what is a life worth living.  I don't want to give
the twist away, but it is worth a read for those looking for more than a light story.

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton
1913 Cornwall and Australia.  2005 Cornwall and Australia.  An old woman
searches for her origins, later continued by her granddaughter.  Full of mystery,
romance, and a view of the ocean.

Where I Want to Be by Adele Griffin
Side-by-side tales of two sisters who come to terms with one sister's mental
illness and the other sister's need to feel normal.
(Available from within the Pioneerland System but not at Benson.)

Gladiator by Carla Capshaw
From the Harlequin Love Inspired Historical series - Yes! The librarian has been
know to read a Harlequin :-)  and she enjoyed it!
(Available from within the Pioneerland System but not at Benson.)

The Weed that Strings the Hangman's Bag by Alan Bradley
Book two in the Flavia de Luce Mystery series.  Loved it even more than the first
volume.

The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley
Book one in the Flavia de Luce Mystery series.  Was sluggish at times but was
ripping through at the end.

Stravaganza: City of Ships by Mary Hoffman
Latest in the Stravaganza series where ordinary London teenagers have
adventures in a parallel world similar to but not quite Renaissance Italy.

Flawed Dogs by Berkeley Breathed
The man who brought the world Bloom County now brings a comedic romp of
regular dogs through the stuffy pedigreed Westminster dog show.  Laugh out
loud funny.

The Cat Who Wasn't There by Lilian Jackson Braun
This time the murder happens in Scotland and not in Pickax, but it is still up to
Qwilleran and his Siamese cats to save the day and solve the case.

Some Enchanted Evening by Christina Dodd
Perfect romantic escape to Scotland in the early 19th century with damsels not in
distress but still being saved by a handsome, irresistible lord of the manor.

Grange House by Sara Blake
Part ghost story and part summer love, summer experienced at a Maine resort by
the upper crust of Boston and New York.  One young woman discovers more to
the house's history and her family's history than first meets the eye.

I am Number Four by Pittacus Lore
If you enjoyed
The Hunger Games trilogy, then the first book in a new series, I
am Number Four
, is what you want to read next.

Evolution of Calpurnia Tate by Jacqueline Kelly

August Moon by Jess Lourey
